20.03.: The blue-black provincial government has begun to financially curtail critical artistic creation in Styria. In addition, they have reshuffled the advisory Cultural Board of Trustees like a coup d’état and installed a number of people who have no expertise and, even worse, include people who are very close to the far-right scene.
The Styrian cultural scene is launching a protest campaign under #KULTURLANDRETTEN and #BRAUCHENWIR. Let’s take to the streets together with the artists and cultural workers affected and send a clear signal: We will not put up with this!
No right-wing extremist attitudes in the committees!
No cuts for art & culture in Styria!
This approach is also clearly contrary to the Cultural Strategy 2030 adopted by the provincial parliament and the Provincial Cultural Funding Act, according to which party-political influence must be curbed and independent expertise given priority.
In its new composition, the Board of Trustees also in no way reflects the complexity of the cultural field: virtually no one has experience in the independent scene, only a few are based in the regions, we are missing people from multilingual or ethnic cultural work, there are hardly any experts from contemporary and experimental art and hardly any supra-regional expertise. In addition, the gender ratio is once again seriously imbalanced.
The developments in art and culture are the first step. Other areas will also be affected in the future. Let’s fight back! TRANSDISCIPLINARY SOLIDARITY!
