Dear Members of the Styrian Provincial Government!
The undersigned advocate an inclusive and diverse society in which people live together peacefully and every person is given a place. This requires support structures that offer advice and guidance. This contributes significantly to social peace. Especially now, in a time of many crises that are dividing society and spreading uncertainty, this support is needed all the more.
It is therefore unacceptable that the Styrian state government is making cuts to protection against violence, extremism prevention and many other key social areas right now, immediately after what happened in Graz. This decision went against the loud call for cohesion – not only in Graz and Styria, but throughout Austria. The clear-cutting that is currently taking place as a result of the cuts and refusal of funding is therefore an attack on peaceful coexistence.
The cuts that have been made undermine humanity. People who are particularly vulnerable for a variety of reasons need social protection. The actions of the Styrian state government are denying them this. However, the consequences of this political decision will not only be felt by them and the organizations concerned, but by all of us.
For this reason, we are calling on the Styrian state government to come to its senses and work together with all those affected to find constructive and sustainable solutions. Social peace and democratic development must not become the plaything of ideological positions.
